Arriving on Kāʻanapali Beach

The evening is held oceanfront at Royal Lahaina Resort & Bungalows, 2780 Kēkaʻa Drive, on Kāʻanapali Beach in West Maui. Gate times shift twice a year, so the confirmation on your booking — not a general rule — is the time to go by. VIP gates open first; General follows roughly fifteen minutes later.

The lei greeting and finding your table

Both tiers start with a lei at the gate. Seating is then pre-assigned by how early you booked rather than by who arrives first on the night — within General, that can mean anywhere from the second row back; within VIP, it's always a table closest to the stage.

The imu is opened

Before the buffet lines open, the imu — the underground oven where the puaʻa has slow-roasted all day — is unearthed in front of the crowd, the traditional start to a luʻau meal.

Dinner and the open bar

An all-you-care-to-eat Hawaiian buffet follows: kalua puaʻa from the imu, seared mahi mahi, Tahitian chicken, lomi lomi salmon, salads, poi and island desserts, plus a children's plate. The open bar runs alongside it — tropical cocktails, beer, wine and soft drinks, with a surcharge on premium liquors.

The show

The stage tells the moʻolelo of Māui through hula and chant, ending with a fire knife performance.

After the show

The evening runs from the gate time on your ticket through the fire knife finale. Kāʻanapali's hotels and condos are a short drive away, and some are a walk back along the beach path.
